Case Studies

A case study is a specific type of academic publication where medical practitioners can share patient cases that are unusual or haven’t been described before.  Only certain journals will publish clinical case reports, and often have their own guidance available on suitable cases, report structure/format and consent forms.  It is worthwhile identifying the appropriate journal you wish to submit to before starting to write the report. 
Every case study requires informed written consent by the patient/guardian.  Journals may require a specific form to be completed, however an alternative generic consent form written by Dr Karen Pearson is kindly shared below. Additionally, if there is involvement by NHS Tayside clinical photography, an additional consent form is required (see below).
